I am on disability can I file to get EIC for my dependent?

Postby bowyn45 » Fri Jan 21, 2011 11:04 pm

I am on disability and I get SSA. I want to file a dependent and get the EIC. I know that I won't get much back because they never took out any federal taxes. Can I file just to get the EIC or is that not possible?

SSDI is UNearned income and never gets you EIC.

Unless you had other income or were living with your husband and trying to file MFS, would not be taxable to you.

If you had no earned income, from working, you aren't eligible for EIC.

Not possible. EARNED income credit requires earned income. You have none.

If your SSDI is your only income, you don't qualify for the EIC. The EIC requires EARNED income and SS benefits are not EARNED income.

If your SSDI is your only income and no taxes were withheld you don't need to file a federal income tax return and there would be no benefit in doing so.

Disability is not EARNED income. EIC is the EARNED income credit. So no, you can't get it.
