Union: it's almost impossible to get fired. You get mandatory vacations, etc.

Non-Union: You can make more money if you do more work. You can advance on your own merit and not collectively: in unions raises are negotiated collectively.

A lot depends on the specifics of the company, the union, and local management tendencies. A union helps give workers more of a voice in how things are run. In general, if there are more unions, there are better wages. Some companies pay higher wages so they can avoid unionization; those will have comparable wages to their unionized competitors. Other companies bust unions so they can cut wages; those ones will have lower wages and usually worse working conditions than their unionized competitors. Some managers trade raises and promotions for personal favors. A union can do a lot to counter that kind of corruption.

My best advice is to consider unionization, and also research the company, the workplace, and its record. If it has lots of complaints, or high turnover, or a history of union-busting, it's probably someplace to avoid.

Its personal. I wouldn't choose a union job, I think union jobs make it easier for lazy people to be employed.

What's better, a union job or non union?

After working non-union for years, I went union. Here's why:

1-Specified work hours. No dirty looks/watch-checking by supervisor as I walked out at 5:00 p.m.
2-Couldn't be bumped out/fired because of someone's (didn't-take-a-civil-service-test) cousin/sister/friend/etc., wanting my job title.

cowjudge is a liar.

It is most certainly possible to be fired in ANY union job .
The difference is that the contract specifies the reasons and the procedure for firing someone.

No job has MANDATORY vacations.
Some union jobs have no paid vacations at all.
My husband has been a union ironworker for 32 years.
He gets paid ONLY for the hours he works.
No paid vacations, sick days, holidays, etc.

If you want to know the real difference, look at this.
