Someone told me today that they get $1147/month. Is that true for everyone or does it go according to # dependents, etc?

It depends on what type of disability, if it's short term disability from your company or state it's can be a lot less than that. If you are talking about social security disability it goes by how much money you paid into the system.

It depends on where the payments are coming from.

Various companies have different disability plans (can range as high as 100% of salary).

For "Social Security Disability" it is adjusted based on the person's earnings to that point. If the amount is low it can be supplemented with SSI payments to a point.

Under most situations a person received less money than if they were still working.

Depends on how much money you pay into social security before you get disabled. Also, your children may get some.

It depends on how much money they paid in to social security before they were disabled. It also depends on the disability and percentage of disability. If they were military, their military pay comes in to play too and they can get extra pay for that.

The average for SSDI is around $1100 month. For SSI, the maximum is $674 month

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is for disabled, elderly, blind people with low or no income, and assets under $2000. It is funded out of the general taxpayer fund. url_not_allowed.ssa.gov/ssi/

SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) is based on work credits you earned, paying FICA payroll taxes. Benefits depend on how much you paid into SS. If it is less than $674, the difference can be made up with SSI to bring it up to that amount. url_not_allowed.ssa.gov/pubs/10072.html
